Although pink eye is not a serious eye disease, the bacterial causes need to be treated because the symptoms do not go away without proper treatment and this variant of conjunctivitis can be passed on to other people just by coming into contact with the exact, identical items. Common pink eye symptoms are:
• Eye redness (hyperemia).
• Swollen, red eyelids.
• More tearing than usual.
• Feeling as if something is in the eye (foreign-body sensation or keratoconjunctivitis).
• An itching or burning feeling.
Sometimes, infections in newborn infants are due to common pathogens such as strep or staph. A mother who is infected with a sexually transmitted disease, such as gonorrhea or chlamydia, also can pass along this infection to the baby — which can show up as pink eye.
