Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix. The most common signs of appendicitis are abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nauseaand vomiting, fever, and abdominal tenderness. An appendectomy is the surgical removal of the appendix through an incision in your abdomen that can be several inches long. Because the tests used to diagnose appendicitis are not perfect, sometimes the operation will show that your appendix is normal.
Appendicitis typically begins with a vague pain in the middle of the abdomen often near the navel or “belly button” (umbilicus). Appendicitis has many forms of manifestation in patients. Appendicitis can be tricky to diagnose unless you have the typical symptoms. Although the appendix does not seem to serve any purpose, however, it can sometimes cause problems.
